July Monthly Meeting

  • Monday, July 06, 2026
  • 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM
  • 569 Hanley Rd., Central Point, OR 97502

SOBA monthly meetings are open to the public.

5:00pm Hive Check Light - SOBA Member, Ken Olmstead will lead hive check on one of the club hives. Attendees to the hive check must bring protective gear, wear close-toed shoes, and gloves are optional. Ken will demonstate a mite check and discuss mite treatment options.

The building is open at 5:00PM and some attendees bring a meal to eat onsite, or bring potluck to share. This is an informal time to socialize and engage with experienced beekeepers.

The main meeting begins at 6:00pm, sharp. There will be no Zoom link for the meeting. Zoom will be used to host our guest speaker.

Dr. Marla Spivak will be the guest speaker presenting her topic, "Pragmatic Bee Breeding for Beekeepers" where she will share about helping beekeepers breed honey bee colonies with stronger resistance to mites and disease. This session explores practical, long-term approaches to reducing chemical treatments through thoughtful, step-by-step breeding strategies.

Dr. Marla Spivak is McKnight Distinguished Professor.

"I'm interested social insects in general, and honey bees specifically: social immunity, behaviors, breeding, and beekeeping on large and small scales. My position is a 3-way split among research, teaching and extension, which allows breadth and freedom to explore basic mechanisms and/or real-world applications in our studies and educational endeavors."

Southern Oregon Beekeepers Association meets on the first MONDAY of June, July, and August at SOREC at 569 Hanley Road in Central Point, OR 97502. Meetings are on the first MONDAY of June, July, and August at the same location.
